Arsenal are the bookmakers’ favourites to sign Sergio Romero from Manchester United, with the Argentine keen for more game time.

The Daily Star report that bookies have the Gunners as the most likely club to make a move for the goalkeeper, in what would be a relatively surprising transfer between rival clubs.

Romero has had to accept a role as back-up to David De Gea since joining United, and that doesn’t look like changing anytime soon. De Gea’s record-equalling number of saves against the Gunners last weekend was largely credited as the reason for his team’s victory, so his performances aren’t likely to get him dropped.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have had various problems with all of their keeping options so far this season.

Petr Čech has made a number of mistakes, although he’s generally played well even though he’s clearly ageing.

David Ospina has had a mixed time, and although Matt Macey was recently rewarded with a new contract, he’s still inexperienced at the top level.

If it were anyone other than Manchester United and José Mourinho, I could almost see this transfer happening. But I just don’t think the Portuguese manager will let a player go to the Gunners, unless he really has no other option.
