Arsene Wenger could make an offer for Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany in January, though it’s unlikely the Sky Blues would entertain selling him.

Kompany is no longer a regular at City due to his ongoing struggles with injury. According to the Daily Star, Arsene Wenger is considering signing him in order to strengthen his defence during the January transfer window.

The report mentions that Arsenal will make the move should City come back in for Alexis Sanchez. Whether that’s as retaliation for their interest or an attempt at a swap deal isn’t clear. What also isn’t clear is why Arsenal would want Kompany in the first place.

The defence does need to be strengthened, and at at his peak, Kompany was a very good defender for City. However, persistent injury problems have restricted him to just 44 appearances for the club since the start of the 2015/16 season.

He’s now a squad player there, though is still the club captain. Kompany has been at City for nine years, and while you wouldn’t rule out him looking for a new challenge, now is hardly the time to be leaving the club.

Him swapping potential glory at City for Arsenal at this stage feels very unlikely.
