Before Arsenal lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich in March, Alexis Sanchez had reportedly agreed a new deal with the club.
According to the Times (£), Alexis was up for staying in north London before the Gunners lost 5-1 for the second time the Bayern Munich. In fact, he supposedly ‘verbally’ agreed a deal.
However, the Champions League humiliation allegedly changed his mind and, as we all know, the Chilean was pushing for a move to Manchester City over the summer.
It was too little too late and, despite the Blues’ deadline £60m bid at the end of the transfer window, the 29-year-old had to stay put this season.
The forward has just six months left on his current contract and the chances of him actually putting pen to paper on an extension look non-existent.
Despite the report, I’m not sure he ever planned to. Surely, if Alexis had made a ‘verbal agreement’ with the club, we would have gotten a sniff of it. It was during a time when Gooners really needed a lift – we couldn’t stop losing and were playing terribly. With this in mind, I’m convinced that someone would have leaked the news to the media.
Still, it’s a moot point now. The Chilean’s off. He’s already got his jacket on.
