Ian Wright is “frightened to death” that Mesut Özil joining Manchester United has started to seem like a done deal next summer.

Özil was man-of-the-match in his last game against Tottenham Hotspur, but then missed the trip to Burnley through illness.

And although fans are keen to keep him at the club, Wright believes Arsenal have a near impossible task stopping him from leaving, reports the Express.

“Mesut [Ozil] on a free to Manchester United looks a shoo-in. I’m sure Jose would love to do that. That would frighten me to death. He is a great talent and having great players around him would lift him up as well.

“I’m sure him and his agent would not push it this far if they were going to sign (for Arsenal).”

Certainly there have been plenty of occasions in the past when Ozil could’ve signed a new deal and didn’t, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t going to. Jack Wilshere has left things similarly late to agree new terms, and yet most people expect that he will.

Besides, the Gunners are in a better position now than they’ve been for a while. It’s hard to remember the last time Arsenal were in the top four of the Premier League table, unless you count the opening day of the new season.

The Europa League group is wrapped up with a game to go and the domestic cups are both still on. For me, the biggest sticking point with Özil will be that he wants to play Champions League football.

Right now, Wenger’s side are better placed to offer him that than they have been for a while. Hopefully that’s enough to convince him not to rejoin Jose Mourinho at United.
