Sergio Ramos has contacted Mesut Özil to try and convince him not to join Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.

Mesut still hasn’t agreed a new deal with the Gunners, and with January approaching, the rumours of a potential move elsewhere have started to grow. In particular, the links to Barcelona have been persistent among the headlines this week.

However, Sergio Ramos has moved to prevent that transfer from taking place, according to Spanish outlet Don Balon. They write (via Daily Star) that Ramos called Özil to ask him to turn the move down.

The pair have always been close, with the Spaniard even wearing Özil’s shirt under his own on one occasion, as a show of solidarity for what he thought was scapegoating of the German by manager Jose Mourinho. Even after Mesut left Real Madrid, he would still post tweets and pictures of the pair on social media, so they clearly remained close.

Hopefully Özil listens to his old friend, and decides to remain with Arsenal. The Gunners are slowly putting a good team together, and it would be a shame to lose such an important part of it so soon.
