Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema believes the Dutch women’s team deserves the same pay as the men’s.

Miedema was instrumental for the Netherlands as they won the European Championships in the summer; the 21-year-old even scored twice in the final.

Meanwhile, the men’s team have continued their alarming decline and have failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia, just two years after failing to qualify for Euro 2016.

Despite that, the men’s team is paid much more than the women’s, something that Miedema doesn’t believe is right.

“It’s really important as we put the exact same effort into our national side as the men do,” she told the Guardian.

“I think you deserve the same. We are European champions. The men don’t even qualify for the World Cup, don’t qualify for the Euros. It’s fair to say we deserve as much money as them right now. All due respect but our men’s team make millions a year, way more than the Norwegian team. Our association is so rich and we hope we’ll get a better deal as well.”

Miedema’s comments come a month after the Norwegian FA announced that its men’s and women’s teams would be receiving equal pay.

Unfortunately, despite Norway making the decision, there’s still a lot of resistance to the idea.

The women’s Netherlands team are certainly leading the way for Dutch football.

They weren’t the favourites for the European Championships, but were spurred on by their home support to achieve something great.

Miedema was key to that, and arrived at Arsenal amid plenty of excitement.

She’s now looking to set the standard for a future generation of footballers and develop the women’s game further.
