Arsene Wenger has heaped praise onto Alex Iwobi after the winger netted another two goals for Nigeria last week but admits the 21-year-old still needs to improve in the final third.

Wenger is clearly a huge fan of Iwobi, not only did he bring the winger through the ranks at Arsenal but he continues to be patient and give him time to develop. All while singing his praises.

“He’s worked on his finishing and he’s improved a lot. Compared to one year ago the difference is unbelievable,” said Wenger.

“We now want him to make a better quality of receptions in the final third. But it will all come because he is a boy who loves to play football who is passionate about the game and has a very good attitude.

“He also analyses his game very well. He is enthusiastic to play and to be involved. Overall I believe it’s fantastic for Nigeria to have a player like that and I am sure they will never be disappointed by his commitment because he has a fantastic attitude, he is a pleasure to work with.”

Iwobi has now scored four goals in 14 appearances for Nigeria. In fact, last week he scored a brace against Argentina and before that he netted the winner against Zambia, making his country the first African side to qualify for the World Cup next year.

Although the 21-year-old is yet to hit his stride in front of goal for Arsenal, he still offers plenty to the team when he plays. As Wenger says, you can’t fault his enthusiasm and his energy is brilliant. He just needs to work on his quality in the final third.

However, the boss is right, Iwobi is still really young. He’s got plenty of time to develop and hone his talent. With the likes of Alexis Sanchez at the club, albeit not for much longer, the winger can learn from one of the best and I’m sure everything will slot into place for him one day.
