RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano has an £89m release clause, according to reports.

The 19-year-old is being watched by many top clubs from Europe, including Arsenal.

According to the Sun, the Gunners, along with Barcelona and several other clubs, have been boosted by the knowledge that he has an £89m release clause. I hope I’m not the only one who thinks a teenager having such a lofty price tag isn’t encouraging news.

Despite Arsenal being name-dropped, it seems the teenager is more a target for Barcelona. The Sun say Spanish publication SPORT report that Upamecano is a target for Ernesto Valverde and could be a long-term solution to their problems at the back.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and AC Milan are also said to be interested. As for Arsenal, they will be needing a centre-back when Per Mertesacker retires, but probably won’t want to spend £89m on one, in my opinion.

Upamecano, a France u21 international, has been a regular for Leipzig this season, with 15 appearances in all competitions. He joined from RB Salzburg in Austria last January, and made 12 appearances.

The centre-back made 23 appearances altogether for Salzburg, and appears to be a highly promising player.
