Matthijs de Ligt’s agent has confirmed that the Ajax defender will be staying put this season.

According to the Sun, Arsenal are interested in Matthijs de Ligt, as are Barcelona. However, the defender’s agent insists that the 18-year-old isn’t going anywhere – at least not this season.

“The intention is to stay at Ajax at least until summer,” said Barry Hulshoff. “He signed a new contract in Amsterdam in August 2017. He is fixed until the summer of 2021.”

As Hulshoff points out, the centre-back only signed a new contract in the summer, taking him up until June 2021 with Ajax, where he’s come through the ranks over the past nine years and broken into the first team.

The teenager has now made 39 appearances for their first team since the second half of last season, 22 of which have been in Eredivisie.

He’s also been capped twice for the Netherlands’ senior side.

De Ligt is only just finding his footing for the club he’s been at since 2008. Therefore, I doubt he’s in any rush to go running off any time soon, especially as he’s only just signed a new, (probably improved) deal with the Dutch side.

However, Hulshoff’s comment that his ‘intention’ is to stay at Ajax until the summer seems a little vague. This may be deliberate, as agents like to be vague in order to keep them in a position of power, or maybe the teenager could actually move after that.
