Wenger press conference: Mesut Özil is back to his best + more

Arsène Wenger says that Mesut Özil is a completely different prospect now that he’s fully fit, after the German shone in the away victory against Everton.

Özil took Everton apart creating chance after chance, and would’ve been astonished to see the six he created in the first half all go begging. However, he took it on himself to put the Gunners into the lead with a good header, and finally he saw one of his chances converted in the second period.

Wenger was asked if this showed Mesut back to his best, and told Sky Sports: “I would say yes. I told him after the game that a fit Ozil is completely different. If you’re not 100% at your best, no matter how good you are, you are at a handicap.

He then added in his press conference, “He was superb. Agile, quick and intelligent. He was always at the service of the team with his quality of passing and when is at that level, he is an exceptional footballer”

Wenger also touched on the fact that the Gunners didn’t go ahead earlier through those early chances created by the German, saying: “We should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up, but we were 1-0 down. We didn’t panic and maintained our focus. Once we equalised, it was all us for the rest of the game.

“I was [concerned] because recently we’ve been punished for every mistake we make away from home. But I knew there was a long time to go.”

It was just the result Arsenal needed away from home, having not won a single away game in the league up until this point.

The draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was encouraging, but only a win would really get the team going, and after bottling the chance to get one against Watford it was good to see the Gunners put five past Everton.

It was also the performance the fans wanted to see from Özil in particular, as some redemption after his miss in that Watford match.
