Theo Walcott posted a picture of himself and Jack Wilshere working in the gym, after the Arsenal pair were left out of the latest England squad.

England manager Gareth Southgate decided not to take either of them to the World Cup qualifiers, so instead they stuck around in North London to work on their fitness together, reports the Daily Mail.

Both players are on the fringes of the Arsenal first-team at the moment, pushing to try and break in with appearances in the League Cup and Europa League.

Neither player has done their chances any harm, in my opinion, with Walcott scoring a goal-per-game in the two competitions, and Wilshere grabbing supporters’ attentions with attractive midfield link-up play and impressive assist for against BATE Borisov.

However, it clearly wasn’t quite enough for Southgate to call them up. Wilshere is still working on getting his fitness back after injury kept him out for five months, and has only just completed his first pair of 90 minute matches for the Gunners since 2014.

Perhaps Southgate didn’t want to risk him this early on in his comeback. Walcott is having no trouble with his fitness, however, but only starting for Arsenal in the smaller matches may be harming his England chances at the moment.

Either way, it’s good to see them both using the time off constructively so they’ll be ready when the Gunners return against Watford.
