Sutton chairman Bruce Elliot has revealed that Arsene Wenger would prefer a smaller changing room.

Much was made of Arsenal’s visit to Sutton United in the FA Cup last season and how they had to trade their big, spacious dressing room for the more cramped and intimate surroundings. Many thought Arsenal wouldn’t enjoy it.

However, according to Sutton United chairman Bruce Elliot, Wenger wasn’t bothered by the smaller dressing rooms at all. In fact, he actually preferred them.

“I think he thoroughly enjoyed it,” he told the Mirror.

“I apologised to him for the size of the dressing rooms and he said that people forget that he came from a very small club in France where the dressing rooms were even smaller.

“He actually said to me that he prefers a small dressing room as it brings him closer to the players.

“If he plays us again, he might be disappointed that we have enlarged them!”

Despite this, Wenger was heavily involved in the design of the Emirates Stadium dressing rooms and opted for a spacious, round design due to how it promoted positive feelings.

Arsenal had few problems at Sutton, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Lucas Perez, now at Deportivo on loan, and Theo Walcott, who scored his 100th goal for the club.

It wasn’t the most convincing of Arsenal’s performances, but it was enough to get them through to the next round.

It was the end of Sutton’s remarkable run in the competition, from which they earned around £1m.

The money has since been reinvested in improving Sutton’s facilities, including expanding the home and away dressing rooms.
