Özil: Alexis, Lacazette and I just recreated what we do in training

Mesut Özil says that the attacking threat we saw on the pitch against Everton is what the German, Alexis and Lacazette do all the time in training.

The trio finally all started a game together against Everton at Goodison Park, and each scored a goal  in the 5-2 win. In addition, Alexis and Özil also added an assist to their tally, and Mesut could’ve had a number of assists with all the chances he created.

Özil said the chemistry between the three players was no surprise, telling Sky Sports: “In training we always show our quality together. Today you saw on the pitch. We showed our quality and all scored.

“We are so happy to win the game. We knew it would be difficult but we showed character. We believed in ourselves.”

Per Mertesacker agreed with the assessment, pointing out that if the Gunners had taken their chances it would’ve been an even easier game: “We started really well, to go 1-0 behind was difficult, but we stuck to our game plan and created a lot of chances in the first half that we did not execute. In the second-half we executed better, our guys on top did it, it was crucial to have Mesut Ozil today.

“The way we handled the situation away from home was magnificent.”

The German pair answered a lot of questions with their performances, as they were arguably the best players at their respective ends of the field. If Özil’s chances had been taken and Arsenal hadn’t given the ball away in defensive areas a couple of times it could have been an even more convincing result.

But when you score five and win the match you can’t complain too much. It would’ve been nice to catch Chelsea’s goal difference but at least the Gunners are closer than they were at the start of the weekend.
