Martin Keown may have given some over-the-top praise to Jack Wilshere.

The 25-year-old performed well in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League on Thursday.

Arsenal’s cup games have given him an opportunity to remind people of the quality he possesses.

He put out another reminder on Thursday, playing an instrumental role in Olivier Giroud’s wonderful winner. It was Wilshere’s smart turn in midfield that duped three Red Star players and started the move.

His exchange of passes with Walcott eventually set-up Giroud for the overhead kick.

Afterwards, Martin Keown had special praise for the midfielder.

“It’s the brilliance of Wilshere, punching a hole in midfield, seeing what mere mortals can only dream of,” the former Arsenal defender told BT Sport (via the Independent).

“It’s a platform for Wilshere to prove fitness and ability.”

I daresay his comments are just a bit over-the-top.

Wilshere’s role in the goal was vital, but it’s nothing he or other players haven’t done before.

Before then, he had struggled to influence the game as Arsenal moved the ball too slowly.

Nonetheless, these moments of quality do Wilshere no harm in his bid to get back into the Premier League starting XI and the England team.

His next opportunity will likely come against Norwich in the Carabao Cup in mid-week.
