Martin Keown feels Arsenal need more signings like Sead Kolasinac.

The former Arsenal defender believes that the Watford result means Arsenal should change their transfer policy. Concerns about the physicality of the squad have surfaced after the 2-1 defeat on Saturday. Arsenal are now suddenly too soft and weak again.

As a result, Keown thinks Arsenal need to buy more physical players in the mould of recent signing Sead Kolasinac. “Going forward, Wenger needs to recruit a different type of player who is prepared to graft and scrap,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Of course we want to see players who are great athletes and extremely skilful but Wenger needs more players in the mould of Sead Kolasinac — men who are solid, determined and direct. Right now, this Arsenal team look a million miles away from becoming champions.

“Where are their physical players? I was fortunate to play in the 1997-1998 Arsenal side. It was a team equipped for all occasions. That team was capable of passing opponents off the pitch but equally if anyone wanted to go to war with us, they would be in for one hell of a battle.”

As for Kolasinac, the Bosnian arrived at Arsenal on a free transfer in the summer, and while he’s started the season well, he had an indifferent match against Watford.

In fact, Arsenal’s team against the Hornets was both industrious and physical, as the likes of Alex Iwobi, Danny Welbeck and Granit Xhaka all played. Interestingly, nobody was saying during the summer that Arsenal needed more physical players. They just need better players.

On the whole, that situation hasn’t changed. Arsenal earned a reputation for preferring to sign small, skilful players. However, their policy has been adjusted over the last couple of years.

Players such as Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, Danny Welbeck, and now Sead Kolasinac all fit a different profile of player. While Alexis Sanchez also fits the ‘small and skilful’ profile, he possesses a certain physicality that other players don’t.
