Jermaine Jenas reckons that Jack Wilshere is Arsenal’s best midfielder and I’m not sure many could disagree with him.

Wilshere made his fourth first team appearance for the Gunners against Red Star Belgrade on Thursday night and ex-Spurs midfielder, Jermaine Jenas, was particularly impressed with the 25-year-old’s performance.

“I do yeah (think he is the solution),” said the pundit.

“I think some of the players that have come into Arsenal over the last couple of years have been odd buys.

“I don’t think they have been Arsenal-type players.

“He’s their best midfielder for me, him alongside Santi Cazorla naturally are the two best midfielders they have got.

“Obviously the fitness has been a genuine issue for Jack.

“It seems behind the scenes the word is he’s playing better than ever.

“I think that little experience at being away to Bournemouth has probably reiterated to him ‘I want to be back at Arsenal’.

“Sometimes you’ve got to go away to really appreciate where you’re at.”

A midfield of Wilshere and Santi Cazorla would be a dream come true. However, sadly we may never get to witness it as both players have under a year left on their current contracts.

Wilshere could get an extension but he needs to stay fit first and Santi, who has injury woes of his own, is now 32 and has been sidelined for a year.

There’s never been any doubt of Wilshere’s ability. It’s his fitness that has been the issue. Ever since he sprained his ankle in July 2011, he’s battled to play football.

The hairline crack in his foot in March 2014 didn’t help either. In fact, after the 2014/15 season, he’s made just five Premier League appearances.

This is why it’s hard to imagine him fending off the injuries consistently.

Hopefully, we will get to see Santi and Wilshere play together as Jenas is right, they ARE Arsenal’s best midfielders, but with the little Spaniard yet to be given a return date, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
