Arsenal supporters want the club to sign Schalke’s Leon Goretzka, after he shone for Germany in the World Cup qualifiers over the weekend.

Goretzka scored twice for the Germans in a 5-1 win over Azerbaijan, and it was the first goal that caught the eye of most supporters. Picking the ball up in the area, facing away from goal, he had to improvise a back-heel to find the net and he pulled it off impressively.

Goretzka’s second was less eye-catching, passing the ball into the net from close range. But that didn’t stop the hype around the midfielder continuing to build.

Recent reports suggest that Arsenal have sent scouts to watch the German, as he runs down the final year of his contract with Schalke.

Supporters are therefore starting to get excited at the prospect of bringing the player to North London, reports Football.London.

One fan even suggested that Goretzka might be the man to replace Mesut Özil, who is also on the last year of his current deal.

Personally, I’m not sure that would be such a good idea, as the two players play very different roles in their teams.

Özil plays a much more advanced role for the Gunners, emphasised by the fact he’s currently being utilised as a wide-forward. Goretzka is a central midfielder and only occasionally moved into more of an attacking-midfield role.

However, a 22-year-old central midfielder scoring goals in the Bundesliga and for Germany being available on a free? That sounds like great business to me.
