Premier League fans, especially those of Arsenal and Liverpool, are celebrating that the Christmas Eve fixture idea has been scrapped.
Fans are over the moon because Sky and the Premier League look as if they’re going to move the 23 December clash between Arsenal and Liverpool to Friday 22 December instead of Christmas Eve.
Sky were keen to move the big game to the day before Christmas because it just so happened to fall on a Sunday. The broadcaster is allowed to show two matches on ‘Super Sunday’. Therefore, they wanted their ratings, no matter how much this could potentially mess up hundreds – if not thousands – of match-going fans’ festivities.
Thankfully, after the fan backlash, it seems the Sky have opted to move the fixture forward by a day instead, according to the Telegraph.
Fans are predictably thrilled as it firstly means that they won’t have to put their Christmas Day in jeopardy in order to watch their team play and secondly their voices have been heard.
Obviously, some fans are disappointed that this is even something we’re celebrating as it shouldn’t have really ever been an option in the first place. But there you go.
Here’s what fans on Twitter had to say.
Doesn't it say something about the state of modern football that we're celebrating the fact that a fixture won't be played on Christmas Eve
