Everton are reportedly planning to make a January move for an Arsenal forward; but not Olivier Giroud, instead they’re after Alexis Sanchez.

The S*n are the source of the reports, which immediately undermines their validity, but the rumours do make some sense. Everton have shown over the summer that they’re willing to spend big money to try and be successful, but so far that spending hasn’t worked out, as the Toffees sit in the relegation zone.

A player like Alexis Sanchez would give them the chance to replace some of the goals lost in the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United. Considering Arsenal are set to lose the Chilean for free in the summer, and to one of their title rivals at that, bringing in around £30m for the player from Everton wouldn’t be bad business. For Everton, they may struggle to get another chance to sign a player of Alexis’ quality for such a comparatively small price.

However, I just can’t see Alexis agreeing to the move.

Even if Arsenal accepted a bid, there seems almost no reason why the 28-year-old would reject a contract with the Gunners (currently fifth) to sign for Everton (currently 18th).

Any big-six side other than Arsenal could offer him Champions League football this season, whilst Everton would offer Europa League football from the bottom of their group.

Even the Gunners can better that.
