Arsenal continued their good form with a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
It was all panic and chaos at the end of the August, but Arsenal have now won six of their last seven games, and only match they didn’t win was a 0-0 draw against Chelsea.
It’s been a great week for the team, securing three wins and successfully managing a mid-week trip to Belarus in the process. It wasn’t always pretty, but we can’t complain with the points.
Brighton at home should have been a straightforward game. Although the performance wasn’t the best we’ll ever see, we did just enough to see off mediocre opposition thanks to goals from Nacho Monreal and Alex Iwobi.
So, here’s how the player’s did.
Defence
Petr Cech 5
Cech didn’t have many saves to make but was tested on set-pieces. He flapped at one, and didn’t look too convincing whenever he did manage to punch – or, in this case, slap – the ball away. Still, it was effective enough, and he’ll be happy with yet another clean sheet.
Shkodran Mustafi 5
Any game Mustafi can get through without diving in on someone is a good game for him. The German completed his third 90 minutes in seven days and had a steady game in the heart of our back three.
Rob Holding 5
A quiet game for Holding, and one he would appreciate given his recent struggles in the Premier League. A 90 minutes without any major accidents was just what he needed.
Nacho Monreal 6
Events don’t come rarer than Monreal scoring a goal. The Spaniard netted just his second league goal for the club, and his first since a win over Swansea four years ago. He was fantastic in the win over West Brom on Monday, and followed that up with another good showing.
Next, midfield
Midfield
Hector Bellerin 5
With Arsenal dominating the ball, Bellerin was able to attack at will down the right flank. While he always supported the Arsenal attack, he struggled a bit with the pace of Jose Izquierdo going the other way.
Granit Xhaka 6
A tidy, if unremarkable game from Xhaka. He kept his passing simple by refraining from extravagant long passes and defended well without diving in on anybody.
Aaron Ramsey 5
Played high up the pitch and frequently attacked the Brighton penalty area, but had little luck in the final third. A pair of scuffed volleys from the edge of the penalty area summed up his game.
Sead Kolasinac 6
He wasn’t quite the attacking force down the left that we’ve come to appreciate, and did give away the free-kick that lead to Solly March hitting the post in the first half. However, he did set-up a chance for Ramsey in the first half and was a threat on set-pieces.
Next, forwards
Forwards
Alex Iwobi 6
Iwobi tried to be positive whenever he got the ball, even if it didn’t always come off for him. There was a touch of rustiness to his play, but he took his goal very well.
Alexis Sanchez 7
He had a quiet first half but came to life in the second. He was responsible for most of Arsenal’s chances, and set-up the second goal of the same with a wonderful back-heel. The Chilean is an exciting player and that second-half showing was the most electric we’ve seen him since coming back into the starting line-up.
Alexandre Lacazette 6
Hit the post early on with a very-well struck effort from distance, but would have been disappointed not to have gotten onto the score-sheet. His touch was also heavy at times.
Next, subs
Subs
Mohamed Elneny n/a
Came on as a late substitute and didn’t have enough time to make an impact on the game.
Theo Walcott 4
Appeared as a second-half sub for Iwobi, but hardly touched the ball during the time he had on the pitch.
Olivier Giroud 5
Having scored his 100th goal in mid-week, Giroud resumed his usual role of second-half sub today. Bar one difficult header late on, not many chances came his way.
