Who had the best window: Arsenal, Liverpool or Tottenham?

Today we’re looking at who had the best window out of Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham.

First, we’ll take you through the business that each team did in the current window, then we’ll round up who we think did best overall. The transfer deadline in England has now passed, so the only movement possible from now on will be outgoings to countries where that isn’t the case, such as in Spain, where the deadline is a day later.

Arsenal

Starting with the Gunners, Arsenal made two major signings in the summer window, bringing in Alexandre Lacazette for a club record £46.5m and Sead Kolašinac for free. Both players look to be excellent signings, the only problem is that they are the only signings.

Meanwhile a number of players departed the club. Oxlade-Chamberlain moved to Liverpool for a higher fee than any player Arsenal have sold in the past (£40m), and he was joined by Wojciech Szczesny, Gabriel Paulista, Kieran Gibbs, and Yaya Sanogo in leaving permanently. Meanwhile Lucas Perez, Emi Martinez and Joel Campbell were among those leaving on loan deals.

Next, Liverpool

Liverpool

Liverpool’s last purchase was the previously mentioned Oxlade-Chamberlain, which would have been their biggest of the summer, except that they also signed Naby Keita for next year. Although the deal is done and announced, Keita won’t join Liverpool until summer 2018. They also brought in Mo Salah for £37.8m, as well as Hull left-back Andrew Robertson and Chelsea youth player Dominic Solanke.

Meanwhile they offloaded Mamadou Sakho in their only major outgoing, with Lucas Leiva, Kevin Stewart and Andre Wisdom also went for small fees. Divock Origi was among a few players loaned.

Next, Tottenham

Tottenham

After a long period of inactivity, Spurs ended up being pretty busy towards the end of the window, bringing in defender Davinson Sanchez for £36m, Serge Aurier for £23m, Fernando Llorente for £11.7m and Juan Foyth for £8.1m. Paulo Gazzaniga also joined from Southampton.

To fund this shopping spree they sold Kyle Walker to City for £45.9m, as well as Kevin Wimmer and Nabil Bentaleb going for around £17m each and small fees being received for Clinton N’Jie and Federico Fazio.

Next, who did best?

So who did best?

Arsenal didn’t make enough signings to really stand out from last year’s disappointing fifth-placed finish, but did well to hold onto their really big names. They moved on a load of players but still not nearly enough, and with too many loaned.

Liverpool made a couple of top signings in Salah and Keita, but Keita is more of an early victory for next season’s window. Oxlade-Chamberlain, as he was for Arsenal, could be hit or miss, we’ll have to wait and see. They did well to sell Sakho for a decent price but otherwise didn’t bring in much.

Tottenham’s signings added depth, but there are no big names among those signed. Aurier is the closest they came, and is a good replacement for Kyle Walker, who they did excellently to somehow sell for so much. Selling Wimmer and Bentaleb for anything over £10m is also impressive.

Overall I think I have to give it to Liverpool.

Although they didn’t get the centre-back they were after, they landed three other big targets and two of those came after already smashing Arsenal at Anfield with the current squad.

I doubt they’ll regret much of their business. The same could be said of Arsenal, but Arsenal did so much less. Spurs did a lot, but it seems like they also took a lot of risks, we’ll have to see how they pay off.
