Arsene Wenger has said that Alexis Sanchez is still looking for his best form.

Alexis was given a start against Cologne in the Europa League in an effort to improve his fitness.

He returned to Arsenal late in the summer due to his participation in the Confederations Cup and then had a disrupted start to the season thanks to a combination of illness, injury and a botched transfer.

There were clear signs of rust, and Arsene Wenger has admitted that he’s still finding his best form.

“I think Sanchez is still running after his best form,” Wenger told BT Sport (via The Daily Star).

“He is a fantastic football player but physically he has just come back.

“But he has it in his locker to do something special, which he did.”

Alexis had a decent game against Cologne. Some sloppiness on the ball was mitigated by a quality goal in the second half.

Wenger will now have to decide if he wants to play Alexis against Chelsea on Sunday.

Starting Alexis would require him to leave out one of Mesut Ozil, Danny Welbeck or Alexandre Lacazette.

Arsenal need Ozil’s creativity, while Welbeck has played well in Alexis’ absence. Lacazette didn’t start against Liverpool and surely can’t be left out of another big game again.

Alexis’ fitness issues could well be a convenient excuse to leave him on the bench on Sunday.
