Arsene Wenger admits that he was reluctant to sign his two-year extension at Arsenal back in May as he wasn’t sure he could continue.
Wenger revealed that ‘personal reasons’ made him hesitate to sign his two-year contract extension with Arsenal back in May. The boss wasn’t sure whether he was still the right man to lede the Gunners forward.
“I’ve been in Arsenal for twenty years. When you’ve been in a club for a long time, you’re wondering if you can continue and bring it up,” the Frenchman said.
After almost 22 years in charge, it’s sad to think that Wenger would ever have to question his position at a club he’s helped win the Premier League three times, clinch the FA Cup seven times, and go an entire season unbeaten. Yet, here we are, and it’s warranted.
Despite reassurances that Arsenal were going to rebuild over the summer, they’ve started the 2017/18 season looking as if nothing’s changed. In fact, they potentially looked the worst they’ve ever been against Liverpool.
It wasn’t in terms of quality, either. On paper, we’ve had far worse teams than this one, which boasts Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Petr Cech, and Aaron Ramsey. However, the spirit was lacking; no one cared or looked as if they wanted to.
While the players are the only people who can go out there and perform on the day, there has to be a reason why they won’t play for the manager.
Perhaps they know that he’s not the right man for the job.
