Steve Nicol thinks that Arsenal’s performance against Chelsea raised a worrying question for manager Arsène Wenger.

Most pundits were impressed with the Gunners’ performance at Stamford Bridge, where the team looked organised and were unlucky not to take all three points away, only being denied by the post and an offside.

However, Steve Nicol thinks the Arsenal showing wasn’t all good news, explaining on ESPN FC via Express: “Going into the game with Arsenal, all the talk was they can’t stand up to the battle, they’ve got not character, where’s the strength? Where’s the guts? We know they’ve got ability but they just don’t have it.

“Chelsea on the other hand are the team that we say have all of that. But they didn’t show it today, Chelsea, Arsenal did. Arsenal showed that all the things that were missing, particularly at Liverpool, that they do have. That would be the worrying thing for me because they’ve shown they’ve got it, where’s it been? And will we see it again?”

It is a bit of a worry that such a similar side could get battered by Liverpool one week and then draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge just a few weeks later. Of course, there were some key changes to the side, with Sead Kolašinac replacing Oxlade-Chamberlain in a necessary defensive upgrade. But that doesn’t fully explain the complete change in team performance.

If I’m being optimistic, then this could be a sign that the Gunners have learned from their mistakes. However, people said the same thing when Arsenal went to the Etihad in 2015 to grind out a 2-0 win with a solid organised performance. But that didn’t make a difference in any of the 5-1 matches against Bayern Munich, or the Liverpool match more recently.

Arsenal don’t need to seem like they’ve turned a corner, they need to prove they actually have done so, I feel. That can only happen by repeating this performance week-in week-out.
