Alexis Sanchez is reportedly being targeted by Real Madrid, with the Spanish La Liga giants targeting a replacement for the injured Karim Benzema.

After Alvaro Morata left for Chelsea in the summer and Benzema since picked up an injury, Real Madrid have started to have problems up front, reports the Daily Star. As a result, the Champions League holders are interested in making an approach in January for Arsenal and Chile forward Alexis Sanchez, who is keen for the switch, so says Don Balon.

Other targets mentioned in the report including Timo Werner and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. According to the Daily Star, “joining Madrid would be a dream come true” for Alexis. Although his history as a former Barcelona player leads to me to believe he would have some reservations about joining the clubs fierce rivals

The Chilean international was reportedly desperate to rejoin Pep Guardiola at Manchester City when the summer transfer window was open, having come close to a move before the window shut. He has 12 months left on his deal with Arsenal and doesn’t look likely of extending his stay at the Emirates Stadium.

If Arsenal can’t get Alexis to sign a new deal, a move to Real Madrid would definitely be preferable to City as they don’t want to lose such a talented player to a domestic rival. Real also have the advantage of being able to sign a pre-contract agreement with Sanchez in January, something City can’t do.

Here’s hoping this doesn’t become a sage again.
