Arsenal have reportedly not held contract talks with Mesut Ozil since March.

Throughout the summer, we didn’t hear the end of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s and Alexis Sanchez’s contract. The fact that Ozil’s contract expires this summer went under the radar. According to BBC journalist David Ornstein, Arsenal haven’t held any talks with the 28-year-old since March.

Six months with no progress on a new deal is quite alarming and doesn’t give the impression that the club are that desperate to keep hold of Ozil, or that the player is so desperate to stay.

It’s possible Arsenal are more relaxed about the German international given the lack of interest from other clubs. Ozil isn’t pushing to leave the club nor are sides banging on Arsenal’s door with a big offer for him.

Now that the Gunners’ wage bill has been reduced after a number of summer departures were made, they might be able to resume negotiations during the season.

Ozil caused a bit of a stir recently when he was released a statement responding to recent criticisms made by ex-Arsenal players working as pundits. He believes that experts and former Gunners should spend less time criticising and more time supporting the club.

The playmaker has come under heavy criticism since joining Arsenal four years ago. It wouldn’t be surprising if the constant criticism he receives pushes him away from the club.
