Arsenal have announced their starting line-up against Doncaster Rovers.

Arsenal and Donny haven’t faced each other since the League Cup in December 2005, which they drew 2-2. The Gunners went through 3-1 on penalties only to get knocked out by Wigan in the next round after losing 1-0 away and winning just 2-1 at home.

Darren Ferguson’s side have beaten Bradford City (3-2), Hull (2-0) and Grimsby Town (1-1; 3-1 penalties) to get up to this point whereas this is Arsenal’s first League Cup clash of the 2017/18 season.

Arsenal are without Santi Cazorla (ankle), Francis Coquelin (hamstring), Mesut Ozil (knee) and Danny Welbeck (groin), and are predictably giving some of the first team players who have been struggling for game time an appearance, as well as a couple of promising youngsters.

Regardless of form, the Gunners should still win and stroll through to the next round. Although stranger things have happened. I don’t think any of us will ever be able to scrub those defeats to Bradford and Birmingham out of our minds.

Despite only losing once – over 100 years ago – to Donny, Arsenal have been known to get knocked out to lower league opposition.

Although the less said about that, the better.
