Per Mertesacker insists that he wants to give 100 per cent in order to win the Premier League title with Arsenal.
Despite winning the Premier League title three times (and the First Division trophy 10 times), Arsenal haven’t done so since 2004 – well before Per moved to north London in 2010. With that in mind, the centre-back insists that he wants to give his all in order to win it with the club.
The 32-year-old’s playing contract expires at the end of the season and the former Germany international will then take up his role as head of Arsenal’s academy. This means that if he wants to win the Premier League title with the Gunners, the team needs to get a wriggle on.
Arsenal are currently down in 12th with just seven points from five games. We’ve only won twice and, until the Chelsea game, weren’t looking particularly inspiring.
Compared to the two Manchester teams who top the table with 13 points, the Gunners don’t look good like title contenders at all and it’s hard to see us getting into the top four again this season, let alone winning it.
However, as Arsenal captain, Per has to be optimistic or at least has to pretend to be.
Oh well, perhaps he’ll get to lift the FA Cup again this season, or even the Europa League. That might be nice for him.
