Paul Merson believes that while Alexandre Lacazette is good, Alvaro Morata is top class.

The former Arsenal man created a combined Arsenal and Chelsea eleven ahead of the game this weekend. He picked just one Arsenal player – Alexis Sanchez – and opted for Alvaro Morata over Alexandre Lacazette.

Merson explained his decision, saying that, while he liked Lacazette, Morata is “different class”.

“No, I like him (Lacazette), I think he is a good player – but Morata is top top draw. Morata is going to be an absolute star in the Premier League. He’s different class,” Merson said, as reported by The Daily Express.

“I watched him come on as a sub in the first game against Burnley and even in that 15 minutes…It’s like when you watch something and someone’s done something in 15 minutes and you think ‘wow, they can play’ and he done that about five times. He’s hit the ground running.

“I like Lacazette don’t get me wrong, but if I was playing Real Madrid on Saturday he would play in front of Lacazette.”

If you can decipher Merson’s weird reasoning, it seems like he was very impressed by Morata’s cameo against Burnley and decided he was a great player based on that.

In fairness, Morata has started life at Chelsea very well. If he continues as he is, he will be a very good signing for them.

That said, when it comes to goalscoring, there’s no contest. Lacazette’s record for Lyon far exceeds Morata’s at Juventus and Real Madrid.

In any case, they’re both different types of strikers who bring different qualities to their teams. They’re both very good strikers. It’s far from the most controversial of Merson opinions.

On Sunday, let’s hope that Lacazette scores a couple and we keep Morata quiet.
