Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has dismissed the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, taking a shot at the likes of Arsenal and Wigan Athletic in the process.

On the eve of the third round of the Carabao Cup, Pochettino has already announced he won’t be taking it seriously. “The pressure is to win the Premier League or Champions League. They are the two big trophies,” he said, reports The Sun.

“I’d love to win a cup for our fans but Tottenham must build a project for the Premier League and Champions League. If we forget those two, it’s a big mistake. For a big team to win trophies, it means the Premier League or Champions League. Wigan won the FA Cup. Where is Wigan now? League One. That is the most important example.”

Those comments seem eerily familiar. They very much resemble comments made by Arsene Wenger, where he played up the importance of the Premier League and Champions League and compared finishing in the top-four to winning a trophy.

Few will disagree that the Premier League and Champions League are much bigger and more important competitions. However, no manager or club can turn their nose up at silverware, I feel. Three FA Cups in four years might not be sufficient to sate our trophy hunger, but it’s certainly better than nothing.

It’ll be interesting to see what the reaction to Pochettino’s comments will be. The summer transfer window saw the Spurs manager and the club widely praised for their conservative transfer strategy and ambition. The Argentine was keen to stress the importance of coaching and giving youth a chance, much in the same way Wenger did.

Hence, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Pochettino received widespread support and praise for his ambition, as opposed to the ridicule Wenger received. Of course, it’s worth pointing out that despite Spurs’ upswing in fortunes, they haven’t won anything in years.
