Important jobs done well: Arsenal player ratings v Chelsea

Arsenal were unlucky to take only a point away from Stamford Bridge in the end, as the Gunners put in a very solid big away performance for once.

We’re going to take you through how we think each player did in the early Sunday kick-off, below:

Defence

Petr Čech – 8

Didn’t have too many saves to make but when he did he was faultless, and did well to control Monreal’s powerful back pass with his chest rather than concede an indirect free kick in the box.

Laurent Koscielny – 8

The most solid of Arsenal’s three centre-backs, Koscielny was pivotal to Arsenal’s clean sheet. Winning 80% of his aerial duels despite facing one of the best aerial players in Morata, as well as making four interceptions, a couple of blocks and a few clearances, Arsenal should be thankful they had Laurent available.

Shkodran Mustafi – 5

Almost caught out after a mistake letting Morata get behind him in the first 45, fortunately Monreal was on hand to recover the situation. He also played Pedro onside and only a good recovery run by Koscielny saved the situation that time.

In the second half he was more solid and scored an offside goal, but in the end that was just another example of him failing to hold a good line. A mixed game at best.

Nacho Monreal – 7

Played well generally, did fire one back at Petr Čech but luckily the Arsenal keeper was awake to the danger. Similar to Koscielny he made four interceptions, and a couple of blocks, along with four clearances and won 75% of his aerial duels despite his height. A good response to Paul Merson’s pre-match comments.

Next, midfield

Midfield

Sead Kolašinac – 7

Sead had another good game generally, but wasn’t quite as effective as against Bournemouth and FC Köln. His most important contribution was getting fouled to get David Luiz sent off. Nonetheless he was dangerous at times, in particular with one first half shot, and he won all of his aerial duels.

Hector Bellerín – 7

Hector created a couple of great chances in the first half and was one of Arsenal’s main threats. He won all of his tackles and although he dropped off in the second half a bit it was still a good game from the Spaniard.

Granit Xhaka – 7

Xhaka made a couple of important interceptions and put a great ball in for Mustafi’s offside goal. His passing wasn’t quite at it’s usual high level, but defensively he did what was required and that was the most important thing today.

Aaron Ramsey – 8

One mazy first half run almost brought a goal and the combination of Ramsey and Lacazette were unlucky to be denied by the post and an unpredictable rebound out. Given man of the match by commentators, he worked hard and contributed at both ends.

Next, forwards

Forwards

Danny Welbeck – 8

Welbeck and Iwobi had a very important job to do in midfield dropping back and they did it well. Perhaps Welbeck could’ve done better with his first-half header, but overall he did well. Let’s hope his injury isn’t as serious as it looked.

Alex Iwobi – 8

Iwobi created the most chances on the Arsenal team, and generally did well at sticking to his role as mentioned above. He completed a higher percentage of his passes than anyone else, an important factor when coming in for Mesut Özil.

Alexandre Lacazette – 6

Very unlucky not to score in the first half as he picked up some good positions. The chance he missed was a very tough one to read, and he did well to force Courtois into another save. Nonetheless, the rest of his game was a bit off its usual high standard, so a relatively average performance by the French international.

Subs: Giroud, Alexis and Elneny all had limited involvement, but didn’t make any big mistakes.
