Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Glenn Hoddle thinks the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United should have signed Jermain Defoe.

Hoddle was talking to BT Sport after Bournemouth’s first win over Brighton, during which Defoe scored his first goal of the season for the Cherries. He said: “You know if you give him one chance [he’s going to score],” reports Daily Star.

“I am so surprised one of the top six teams in this country haven’t taken him and got him back in. This fella keeps himself fit and he only needs one chance in a game. If he was at United or Arsenal or something and he’s coming on for a half hour every game, he would get four or five chances.”

I feel it seems a bit early to be making judgements about the players that are currently at Arsenal or United. The Gunners have Alexandre Lacazette, Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck as options up front, all of whom I believe can match Defoe’s goals.

Personally, it’s hard to argue Arsenal should have replaced any part of their strong attack for a player who will be 35 in under three weeks. It’s too early to make judgements.

I don’t believe the Gunners need any more players to bolster their strike-force, especially considering Arsene Wenger admitted the squad was overstocked in the summer.

I think Hoddle is going a bit overboard with his opinions on the Englishman. I agree Defoe has been a fantastic Premier League striker, but Arsenal have better options in the squad.
