Arsenal have asked Manchester United to keep them informed about any updates on Anthony Martial’s future, according to latest reports.

The Express claim that the Gunners have approached United over the French international’s availability, and that Martial is frustrated by the fact he’s only made one league start for the Red Devils since the start of the season.

The 21-year-old received his only start against Leicester City. Ironically he’s done much better in his four substitute appearances. Against Leicester, he didn’t contribute to any of the goals, but in the other four appearances he managed three goals and an assist.

Martial also scored and assisted in the League Cup, but nearly every time he’s scored a goal he’s started the next game on the bench.

So far, all of his appearances have come from the left-wing, and this is a position where Arsenal could start to have concerns if Alexis Sanchez ends up leaving in January or next summer.

Although Alex Iwobi, Danny Welbeck and Reiss Nelson can all play the position, I feel none have ever shown the kind of goal-scoring consistency at the top level that Alexis has.

Hypothetically, Martial could provide the answer. In reality, Jose Mourinho has never appeared keen to sell to Arsenal in the past. Even the transfer of Petr Čech seemed to take place mostly against his wishes.

Martial has a contract until 2019, meaning the Gunners will likely have to pay a tidy sum for the former Monaco forward.
