Arsenal will hold further contract talks with Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez and German playmaker Mesut Ozil, but aren’t holding out much hope of tying the pair down to new deals.
The contracts of Alexis and Ozil expire this summer and despite very little progress being made on extending them, Arsenal will try again this season. That’s according to the Telegraph, who report that although Arsenal want them to extend their contracts, there’s little chance of the 28-year-olds remaining at the club.
Arsenal haven’t held talks with Ozil since last March. The German international has admitted that he doesn’t know what his future holds. Alexis, meanwhile, is surely not going to bother with negotiations after the Gunners prevented him from moving to Manchester City.
He was said to be very unhappy with Arsenal and Arsene Wenger, I believe, which doesn’t bode well for any future discussions. Arsenal are now facing the real prospect of losing their two best players for nothing in the summer. Wenger was prepared to take the risk, given that he needed both of them to make the London club a competitive team.
However, replacing them without receiving any money for their departures will be a difficult thing to do. A lot can happen between now and the end of the season. Our prospects could look a lot better a few months down the line.
