Chuba Akpom is still hopeful of getting a chance with the Gunners, and says that at this point he’s just waiting to be able to prove himself.

Akpom was speaking at an event for the release of FIFA 18, and was asked about his current situation at Arsenal. He’s played three games for the u23s so far this campaign, but hasn’t yet made an appearance for the senior side and is yet to score in his academy matches.

The 21-year-old told Goal: “I was close to going on loan. I’ve just got to take my chance when it comes. I’m working hard every day in training and I’m just waiting for that chance to come. You never know what can happen after you get a chance. I’ve got high hopes, I’m just waiting.”

The England u21 international has a contract until 2019, but this season could be make or break, in my opinion, especially after he was left out of the pre-season tour for younger youth prospects like Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson – both of whom have been scoring freely for the u23s.

Akpom has had a pretty tough time trying to prove himself at senior level. Last season, he got a loan to a then-Championship team in Brighton. He made 10 appearances and didn’t score, which sounds bad until you look at the games he played.

In those 10 appearances, Akpom got one start, and was subbed off in under an hour. The remaining nine appearances were in the last third of matches from the bench. Not exactly the best way to get into a rhythm.

In his only senior appearance for the Gunners in 2016/17, Chuba got an assist. You’d think he’d have to do the same again or better the next time he gets a chance if he wants to remain at the Emirates.
