Shaun Goater: Arsenal win over Liverpool is vital

Former Manchester City striker, Shaun Goater, believes that Arsenal’s clash against Liverpool on Sunday is ‘vitally important’ for the Gunners’ campaign this season.

After losing 1-0 against Stoke last Saturday, Goater believes that Arsene Wenger’s side still hasn’t really hit the ground running, despite their chaotic opening day win against Leicester. And, if they’re really going to make their mark on the Premiership this term, the need a win against Liverpool.

“Yes Arsenal do (need to win) because they haven’t hit the ground running,” Goater, who scored 103 league goals for City, said on Sky Sports.

“They’ve bought in Lacazette, and yes he got off the mark and scored a goal, but they haven’t hit the ground running.

“They’re not flowing in the way I guess Arsene Wenger wants them to be flowing.

“So this game is vitally important for them one, to get some confidence and belief.

“Otherwise I think it will start a lot of criticism if they don’t get this result.”

Arsenal don’t have a fantastic record at Anfield. In fact, Liverpool have won 48 out of 91 home games against the Gunners, and have only lost 24.

Wenger’s side currently looks a bit clueless and although they weren’t as bad as everyone made out against the Potters, there’s still a lot of room for improvement all over the pitch.

With Manchester United scoring eight in two games, while everyone else drops points, it’s looking as if it’ll be another difficult season. Although, when was it ever easy?

As Goater says, Arsenal need to impose themselves on the league and hit the ground running. Will that happen at Anfield on Sunday? Well, it’s as good a place as any.

Last season they took all six points. Surely we won’t let them do that again?
