Hold the press people, Stewart Robson has managed to say something vaguely complimentary about Arsenal.

The former Arsenal midfielder isn’t know for being a fan of his former club, so the fact that he’s described Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez as ‘ideal’ for Arsene Wenger’s new formation is a bit of a surprise.

“The way Arsenal are going to play with this 3-4-3 system, Ozil and Sanchez would be absolutely ideal for it,” he told talkSPORT.

“Playing in the wide positions in the front line, they can find those little bits of space, use their creativity in different ways with Ozil and his passing and Sanchez running with the ball.

“Even if Sanchez went, I still think they’ll have a little bit of quality.

“Danny Welbeck played very well last week [in the Community Shield win over Chelsea] and Iwobi did very well in those wide positions.

“But I think Ozil will get better and will take on centre stage for Arsenal this season.”

Fine, it’s not exactly glimmering praise but it’s better than the usual bile he spews about the manager.

Ozil has indeed improved since the formation change to 3-4-3 as he has more space and can use his creativity to the best of his ability. Likewise, Alexis isn’t quite front and centre so he can hold onto the ball and run into space, just like he enjoys, while getting a chance to bang in goals.

Whether we’ll be seeing the Chilean step back into that role this season is another issue.

The 28-year-old returned from his extended break the other week after his involvement in the Confederations Cup and while he wasn’t fit enough to feature against Leicester anyway, he’s now suffered an ‘abdominal injury’ and has been ruled out until the end of August.

Alexis and his girlfriend Mayte Rodriguez attended Arsenal’s 4-3 win over Leicester on Friday night.

While Wenger claims that the forward is focused and was happy with the 4-3 win over the Foxes, most Gooners, myself included, are pretty sceptical since there are reports that he wants to could force a move away from north London this summer.

It’s difficult to speculate where he’d go though, since Arsenal claim they wouldn’t sell to rivals, which rules out Manchester City, and PSG have just blown a £198m load on Neymar.
