Marseille president, Jacques-Henri Eyraud, has wished Abou Diaby luck after the Ligue 1 club released the ex-Arsenal midfielder at the end of last season.

Eyraud has described Diaby as a ‘good guy’ and wished him luck after Marseille released the midfielder at the end of last season.

“I think he’s a good guy,” Eyraud said, reports Tribal Football. “Maybe it’s part of my regret at not having managed to make sure that this good man can continue with OM to be the football player who has raised so many hopes.

“I think he will find his way on or off the pitch, at least I wish him good luck.”

The 31-year-old has led a tragic career after suffering a horrific ankle injury thanks to a tackle from Sunderland’s Dan Smith back in 2006.

Since the ankle fracture, the Frenchman suffered a total of 42 injuries during his nine years in north London before Arsene Wenger finally decided that it was time to call it a day.

The boss had genuinely believed in his ability and obviously found it difficult to let go of a player who could have amounted to so much.

The talented midfielder, who was tipped for big things, only ever featured 124 times for Arsenal’s first team in the Premier League, with each appearance averaging 63 minutes.

In 2009/10, it looked as if he’d turned a corner, making 29 Premiership appearances, but unfortunately everything went downhill once again from there.

The Gunners eventually released Diaby to Marseille in 2015. However, the injury-prone player only racked up five Ligue 1 appearances.

The french club decided to let him go at the end of last season and Diaby is now a free agent.

Diaby’s story is beyond sad, but that doesn’t mean that clubs should have to hold onto him for longer than is feasible. Still… Hopefully, he’s happy.
