Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will be given a chance to prove he can still play for the Gunners, after holding talks with manager Arsene Wenger.

Wilshere was reportedly on the list of players to be sold this summer as part of Wenger’s efforts to trim his squad. However, according to the Daily Mail, the 25-year-old will now be given a chance to prove himself at Arsenal after holding constructive talks with his boss.

There was a notable lack of communication between Arsenal and Wilshere earlier in the summer. Despite the England playmaker being in the last year of his contract, there was no talk of the Gunners offering an extension.

Wenger didn’t mention Wilshere once, while the player was also notably silent. Reports then emerged that Arsenal were hoping to sell the midfielder amid interest from the likes of West Ham, Sampdoria and Antalyaspor.

However, a deal couldn’t be agreed and Wilshere remained at Arsenal. He recently returned to first-team training and has been playing for the U23s, although recently causing a bit of controversy by receiving a red in an U23 game and getting into a fight in the Emirates Stadium tunnel.

If Wenger does have plans to use Wilshere this season, it could mean that he doesn’t intend to bring in another central midfielder between now and the end of the window. Arsenal would have six in the squad should the academy graduate stay.

There’d be no room for a new one without somebody leaving the club, I feel.
