Former Arsenal striker-turned-pundit Ian Wright believes the Gunners should sign Chelsea centre-forward Diego Costa this summer.

Wright says Arsenal have a lack of leaders in the squad and should look to the Brazilian-born Spanish international to provide some mettle, given his move to Atletico Madrid doesn’t look to be happening, reports The Sun.

Nemanja Matic was also a player Wright wanted Arsenal to sign as a result of the Gunners lack of physicality in the middle of the park. But the chance to bolster the attack with a striker proven in the Premier League is something the pundit desperately wanted to see, even with Costa’s indiscipline.

“To be honest, as fanciful and unlikely as it may be, I’d also like to see Arsenal at least dipping their toe in the water for Diego Costa. For all the talk of him going back to Spain, nothing’s been done yet, so at least ask the question,” said Wright.

“Because for all he can be troublesome, he is also a brilliant, proven Prem goalscorer. With Costa you were guaranteed goals. I know a lot of Arsenal fans worry about whether enough has been done for them to really progress this season.”

Costa scored 20 goals and made seven assists in 35 Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season. His future was decided in the spring time, with manager Antonio Conte almost letting the 28-year-old move to the Chinese Super League.

The striker himself said he’s wanted to leave Chelsea for some time, but former side Atletico Madrid haven’t made an approach for his services, perhaps due to their transfer ban that means they can’t bring players to the club until midway through the season.

But regardless of his lack of movement in the transfer market, I don’t believe Costa would be a good signing for Arsenal. Arsene Wenger doesn’t like players who rock the boat or cause him problems behind the scenes – unless they’re Alexis Sanchez – so it’s hard to see the Spanish centre-forward signed ahead of the new season.
