Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is backing Alexandre Lacazette to succeed with the Gunners.
Lacazette signed for Arsenal this summer in a record £52m deal, and is already expected to be one of the Premier League’s top scorers this season. While there is some doubt about Lacazette’s ability to score in the English top flight, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes he’ll be a success.
“He has a different game to Giroud, which I think is good because you need different types of strikers,” he said, reports the Daily Mail. “He did it in the French league and people might say it’s a different league, but, with due respect to Lyon, he’ll also be with better players. I’m backing him to have a good season.”
Much has been made of Lacazette’s very impressive scoring record in France and how Ligue 1 is perceived to be a lower standard of competition. Despite the expectation on him, fans should realise that Lacazette will need time to settle in and get to his best regardless.
Henry himself took a while to settle in England and into his new role, but once he got his first goal he didn’t stop for several years. He’s Arsenal’s all-time top goalscorer now and has given glowing endorsement for a player long linked with a move to the Gunners.
Lacazette was unable to score against Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday, hitting the post with an instinctive curling effort, but will be hopeful of getting his first competitive goal for the club against Leicester on Friday night.
