Sheffield Wednesday are interested in former Arsenal centre-back Johan Djourou, as they look to return to the Premier League.

Djourou left Arsenal in 2014, after spending 11 years at the club, a few years of which were spent on loan at Birmingham, Hannover 96 and Hamburger SV. Having come to the end of his three year permanent deal at Hamburg, he is now a free agent, and is looking at a return to England, according to talkSPORT.

The Sheffield Wednesday manager has refused to give any indication of whether the rumours are true, but reports in the Swiss international’s homeland suggest that they are. Djourou has found as much success with his national team as anywhere else, having made 65 appearances for the senior side, as well as 25 appearances for the youth teams.

Djourou initially joined Arsenal as a youth player, and has always shown a lot of love for the Gunners. He still posts regularly after matches and comments on Instagram about his love for the club. However, it wasn’t plain sailing when the 6’3″ defender was in North London.

He was part of one of the most difficult periods for the club in recent times, as the team made the move from the Emirates to Highbury and endured financial restrictions as a result. The centre-back made 140 appearances for the Gunners during this era of very little success on the pitch.

As with so many players during this period, his time was disrupted by long-term injuries, and unfortunately injury problems seem to have continued to affect him in Germany. Hopefully he’ll be back fit and playing soon, whoever picks him up.
