Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is wanted by Crystal Palace, Everton and West Brom this summer, according to latest reports.

The former Arsenal captain could be close to a return to the Premier League. According to El Mundo Deportivo via talkSPORT, Everton and West Brom are interested in signing the Barcelona defender.

Vermaelen has struggled at Barcelona since signing in a deal worth £17m in 2014. Frequent injuries have prevented him starting and the Catalans simply don’t have him in their plans anymore. The Belgian international spent last season on loan with AS Roma, making just 12 appearances in all competitions.

The 31-year-old’s injury record might put Everton off. According to the report, the Toffees would like assurances over Vermaelen’s fitness before committing to signing him. West Brom, I feel, are always keen to sign centre-backs as Tony Pulis is obligated to have at least four in the starting eleven at any given time. Crystal Palace have also been linked.

Vermaelen signed for Arsenal in 2009, making 150 appearances and becoming club captain before he was sold to Barcelona. His career somewhat stalled after he made the £15m switch to La Liga in 2014 and his time at the Nou Camp could finally be coming to an end.
