Alex Iwobi has been ruled out of Nigeria’s matches over the international break, as he has picked up a thigh muscle strain.

Iwobi was set to join up with the Super Eagles after Arsenal’s match again Liverpool, however according to BBC Sport he has now been replaced by Aaron Samuel in Nigeria’s squad, thanks to this latest injury.

Iwobi was also left out of the squad for Liverpool on Sunday, and the rumours around at the time were that he was injured, but now this has been confirmed, both by the BBC and also by the player himself on his Twitter account.

There’s no word yet on how long the injury will keep Iwobi out for and how much club football he’ll miss on his return as a result.

Last season Alex was a regular for the Arsenal first-team, playing 39 matches despite falling out of favour towards the end of the season. The Nigerian international then had a very promising pre-season with the Gunners and seemed to be back in contention for a starting place this campaign.

However, after just two appearances and 78 minutes of football, Iwobi looks set for another spell on the sidelines. Hopefully he can return to action soon.
