Arsenal have had many great strikers over the years, but what standard does Alexandre Lacazette have to reach?

Since the days of Thierry Henry, Arsenal have struggled to find a consistent 20-goal-a-season striker.

Emmanuel Adebayor, Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez have each had a season where they scored more than 20 Premier League goals, but the former two chose to leave afterwards, while the latter could follow in their footsteps.

Alexandre Lacazette will arrive at Arsenal with a big reputation for scoring goals, scoring 28 in last season’s Ligue 1. He’d be expected to replicate that feat in the Premier League. More than anything, consistency is what Arsenal will be looking for.

Since the Henry days, there have been several Arsenal players who have enjoyed prolific seasons, but for one reason or another didn’t replicate it. Emmanuel Adebayor scored 24 goals during the 2007/08 season, but managed just 10 the follow season before he left to join Manchester City.

Robin van Persie had that consistency, scoring 18 goals in 2010/11 and following that up with a record breaking 30 goal season in the 2011/12. He went on to have another prolific year at Manchester United.

His replacement, Olivier Giroud, has been consistent. He was Arsenal’s top Premier League scorer in 2013/14 and 2015/16, with 16 in both seasons. In between that is a 14-goal campaign. These are decent numbers, but not as high as Arsenal would want them.

Alexis Sanchez scored 16 goals in his maiden campaign, and last season topped the scoring charts for Arsenal with 24. Lacazette, then, would have to reach at least 20 goals to match the standard set over the years, and would have to go some distance to top van Persie.
