Arsène Wenger revealed the Arsenal players suffered with food poisoning in Wednesday’s penalty shootout win with Bayern Munich.

Although Arsenal ended up leaving the Shanghai Stadium victorious, the team was affected by illness throughout. Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny were both absent altogether, although it’s not clear whether this is related, but Wenger did confirm other players who were affected.

Firstly Mertesacker had to pull out of the team in the warm up, after initially being named in the XI. Next, Kolašinac had to leave the game early as he couldn’t make it to half time.

Walcott and Ramsey also had very limited minute, only coming on in the second half to give others a rest. Wenger confirmed post-match that all of these players were affected by food poisoning.

He also admitted that the large change in climate, from Australian winter to sweltering Shanghai isn’t “ideal physically to prepare” for the season.

Arsenal play Chelsea on Saturday, which gives the players a few days to recover, but it’s certainly not what the team needs with the season approaching.
