Alex Iwobi had high praise for Emi Martinez after Arsenal’s penalty shoot-out win against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

  • Iwobi praises Emi’s penalty-saving skills
  • Arsenal beat Bayern 3-2 on penalties
  • Martinez has only made 13 appearances for Arsenal’s first team

Iwobi ‘bigged up’ goalkeeper Martinez after his penalty save meant Arsenal won the pre-season clash against Bayern in Shanghai on Wednesday.

“We all know he’s capable of doing that,” Iwobi told Arsenal.com. “In training he’s very sharp and light on his toes. I’d also like to big him up and say a big congratulations to him as well.”

Despite an early penalty from Bayern goal machine Robert Lewandowski and the Bundesliga giants dominating the game, some fantastic link-up play with Aaron Ramsey saw Iwobi head home at Arsenal equaliser in the 93rd minute, forcing the tie to penalties.

While the Gunners still aren’t exactly brilliant at spot-kicks, considering Mohamed Elneny missed his, Martinez’s save to deny Bayern’s Juan Bernat meant that Arsenal, for once, managed to beat the Germans.

Martinez looks set to become Arsenal’s #2 next season with Wojciech Szczesny signing for Juventus and David Ospina most likely heading for the exit. Therefore, it’s reassuring to see we’ve got some talent coming through the ranks.

The 24-year-old has only ever made 13 appearances for the Gunners’ first team since 2011, keeping an impressive six clean sheets in that time. However, this number will most likely rise next season.
