Serie A side Inter Milan are preparing to rival Arsenal in the quest for Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, who recently impressed with Germany at the Confederations Cup tournament.

He netted three goals and created an assist during his four appearances at the competition, which Germany went on to win.

According to recent reports, Inter see Goretzka as a potential replacement for Joao Mario in central midfield. The Portugal international has been heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain recently and could make a lucrative switch this summer.

Schalke have responded to speculation in recent days, saying they are refusing to sell the 22-year-old despite the fact that he hasn’t signed an extension on his existing deal at the Veltins-Arena.

Goretzka only has a year left on his current contract and he’s a prized asset with the Royal Blues.

It’s unsurprising that they’re doing their utmost to keep hold of him but teams are trying to unsettle him ahead of the new campaign by registering their interest in his services.

Unless he formally hands in a transfer request though, speculation regarding his future is likely to continue.
