Ex-Arsenal defender Gael Clichy has made a surprise move to Instanbul Basaksehir. He’s due to undergo a medical and officially sign his contract today.

Clichy was released by Manchester City this summer, along with Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta, and was linked with a number of Premier League clubs before he chose the Turkish Super Lig, reports the Mirror.

Basaksehir finished second in the domestic league last season. The club revealed the deal was all but done on Twitter on Thursday.

“@Gaelclichy22 will sign a contract with our club at 2:00 pm after tomorrow morning’s health checkup. ✍🏾” said Basaksehir on their official Twitter account.

The French international made 24 Premier League appearances last season. He struggled for consistency at times and looks to be replaced by Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy.

Before Arsenal confirmed the signing of Schalke’s Sean Kolasinac, many questioned if it would be worth bringing back Clichy for free.

The 31-year-old made over 260 appearances for Arsenal between 2003 and 2011, and went on to surpass 190 appearances as a Manchester City player from 2011/12 until this summer.
