Petr Cech had some wise words for the younger Arsenal players following their win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
- Arsenal beat Bayern 3-2 on penalties
- Cech refused to lift trophy post-match as it’s only pre-season
- Goalkeeper urged youngster to aim higher
Cech refused to lift the trophy awarded to Arsenal after they beat Bayern on penalties in Shanghai on Wednesday.
Although some of the youngsters were urging the goalkeeper, who was substituted for Emi Martinez before the shoot-out, to lift the cup into the air in celebration, the 35-year-old refused, informing them that this isn’t the type of trophy you lift.
“This is not the trophy we lift guys,” he said. “This is not the trophy we lift. Let’s lift the big one at the end of the season. Not this one!”

Not that Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah seemed to pay much attention, since they lifted it anyway.
Cech won 13 trophies while at Chelsea, not including two Community Shields.
One of these was the Champions League (2011-12) and four were Premierships.
Therefore, the former Czech Republic international has seen his fair share of silverware and knows that these pre-season cups aren’t anything more than a bit of fun, team bonding, good PR, and practice for the campaign ahead.
Saying this, Cech wasn’t with us when we won that bear trophy against Southampton five years ago. He’d probably lift that.
